Guidelines for contributors
|
BABYLONIA is a journal created to help foster an exchange of ideas on language teaching between those working 'on the ground' and those involved in research. To this end, the editorial staff has chosen to emphasise articles which relate to practical teaching experience and research, presented in a way which is accessible even to the non-academic reader. We ask, therefore, that the authors of these articles use clear language and give concrete examples or usable materials where possible. We trust that they will respect the following guidelines.
1. Articles
The articles should contain on average 4-5 pages, including illustrations, graphs, etc. One page corresponds roughly to 4000 characters (including spaces). The texts should be sent by e-mail and written as a Word document, either for Mac or Windows.
2. Presentation of the articles (Layout)
The texts should be written in Times 12, and any unnecessary formatting should be avoided. Bold type, italics, or simple quotation marks (") can be used to highlight words or passages in the text. Titles can be numbered up to a maximum of two digits.
We would ask that charts and diagrams be kept as simple as possible and that any special needs regarding the layout of the article be clearly indicated. It is also possible to use photos or pictures in the articles; these should be sent as separate files (JPG or PDF, with a resolution of 300 dpi), and it should be specified where in the text they are to be inserted. PHOTOSHOP can, of course, be used to edit the files beforehand.
3. Bibliography, quotations and notes
Any texts quoted in the article must appear in the bibliography. Some examples of a bibliographical reference within the text are as follows:
(Rossi, 1989: 88) (Meissner & Reinfried, 1998)
Some examples for bibliographical references at the end of the text:
BABYLONIA's readers are often not academics; we ask, therefore, that contributors limit footnotes and endnotes to what they consider to be essential.
4. Summary of content
Every article will appear accompanied by a brief summary of its content (maximum 1350 characters, including spaces), written by the author in the language used in the article itself and, if possible, translated into another language (preferably a different language family). If the author submits the summary only in his/her language, it will be translated by the editorial staff of BABYLONIA.
5. Biographical information
Contributors are asked to provide a small, 5-line presentation of themselves (background, titles, areas of research, etc.).
6. Spelling
We ask that articles submitted in English be written using an accepted standard (British or American).
7. Proofs
The author will receive a proof copy of his article (in PDF format) which should be read through and corrected as quickly as possible. Any corrections to be made should be sent to the editorial office of BABYLONIA either by fax or e-mail and should be as precise (and legible) as possible.
8. Complimentary copies for the author
Authors will receive 3 copies of the issue containing their article. They also have the right to a free one-year subscription to BABYLONIA.
9. Copyright
The articles are protected by copyright. However, republishing is generally acceptable as long as (1) the author agrees and (2) the source is clearly mentioned. As a rule the author must be contacted (if necessary through the editorial office), and the original publisher of the article must be informed of the new publication. A copy of the newly-published article must then be sent to both the author and the original publisher.
10. Contacting the editorial office
The supervising editor of Babylonia is Sonia Rezgui (sonia.rezgui@phzh.ch). The editorial staff selects a person (or persons) to organize the content of each issue. Correspondance usually takes place between those members of the editorial staff charged with organizing the issue, the contributors, and the supervising editor.
The journal is published by the Fondation Langes et Cultures
